THE new visa application system, which allows students to work as they study, was launched yesterday in the United Kingdom.

According to a statement from the British High Commission in Kampala, Ugandan students seeking to study in the UK will be required to apply for visas through Tier 4 of the streamlined points-based system.

Under the new procedure, students will be required to prove that they have been accepted to a course run by an education institution that is licensed by the UK border agency .

Students will also have to prove that they have the means to support themselves while in the UK and supply their biometric details at their local visa application centre.

“If granted a visa, the new system will allow international scholars to undertake part-time work of up to 20 hours per week during the term, full-time work during the holidays and undertake any course-related work placements in the UK,” the statement said.

The new system allows students to check whether they are eligible for a visa before applying.

The statement said all independent British fee-paying schools, colleges and universities that are planning to admit international students would need a licence to do so.

“This will help the UK government to crackdown on bogus colleges, something which will be welcome news to many Ugandan students, who can now be sure the institution they intend to study at, is approved,” said the statement.

“Any visa applicant caught using false documents, lying or withholding relevant information might be banned from coming to the UK for 10 years,” the statement warned.

Over 1,000 UK institutions have signed up to fund international students, according to the statement.
