FUFA has appointed retired FIFA referee Haruna Kebba head of football referees’ fitness programme with a mission to improve the quality of local refereeing.

Kebba’s appointment follows a plan by global football body FIFA that named officials to spearhead the improvement of refereeing in the Africa’s South Eastern zone.

The officials are Zimbabwean Felix Tangawarima, Malawian Mark Ephrahim Zongo and Carlos Henrique of South Africa.

Tangawarima assessed Uganda Super League and Kakungulu Cup referees at Namboole stadium early this year.

Kebba will organise and oversee referees fitness tests and also recommend the right candidates to handle domestic events. He will also work closely with FIFA officials in charge of the region.

“He will be in charge of all the referees’ fitness programmes,” FUFA publicist Rogers Mulindwa told the weekly PostBank press briefing yesterday.

Haruna Mpangire, head of the FUFA referees standing committee, will now largely play an administrative role.
