KAMPALA Pentecostal Church (KPC) has changed its name to Watoto Church. The new name was unveiled during the church’s 25th anniversary celebrations at Watoto Church’s new base in Kyengera, a city suburb, on Saturday.
Watoto is a Kiswahili word meaning children. Church leaders say the name is synonymous with the true meaning of what the church is meant to be.
Jubilant members of the congregation cheered and danced as banners, bearing the new name, Watoto Church, dropped from the stage amid a fireworks display.
The congregation was entertained by gospel artistes such as Pastor Wilson Bugembe, Judith Babirye and the Watoto Children’s Choir.
“We have had 25 fabulous years. But we cannot dwell on the past, we must embrace the future. There are 25 phenomenal years waiting for us,†said Pastor Gary Skinner.
Launched on the Easter Sunday of April 22, 1984, the church has grown to be one of the most influential institutions in Uganda. It has a membership of about 20,000.
Through a number of programmes, the Church has improved the wellbeing of communities. For example, the Watoto Child Care Ministries addresses the needs of orphans.
