Women have been urged to go for regular checkups during pregnancy.

Buganda Queen Sylvia Nagginda said opting for traditional birth attendants exposes the lives of the women and those their unborn babies to danger.

“You should utilise the few health centres than staying at home. It is your life and that of your children you are protecting,” Nagginda advised.

Addressing residents Kyamuliibwa and Kalungu sub-counties in Masaka district on Wednesday, the queen advised the men to escort their pregnant wives whenever going for medical check up.

The Nabagereka cautioned couples against having so many children whom they could not look after. She said husbands and wives should first discuss the number of children they can look after.

Nagginda, on a reproductive health tour sponsored by the UN population fund, said it was absurd that many children die before their first birthday.

She also called for advice and protection of children against indulging in early sex which would result into unplanned pregnancies.
Allan Waliggo, a Mengo official assured the people that the Nabagereka’s call did not contradict Buganda’s cultures.
