THE 23rd USPA awards night has all the markings of yet another night of glitz and glamour.
The sports scribes and uganda telecom have promised the 400 guests on card de luxe treatment in Hotel Africana’s plush Nile Hall. Athlete Moses Kipsiro, the 2007 sportsman of the year, has a rare mix of challengers in a rugby team, golfer Flavia Namakula and tennis player Duncan Mugabe.
Inaugurated in 1974, the prestigious award has been a special preserve of athletics, boxing, football, handball, handball, netball and motor rallying.
Should Kipsiro retain title, he will become the third individual to do so. Only Dorcus Inzikuru, Boniface Kiprop and the national soccer team the Cranes have consecutively won the award.
Parliament Speaker Edward Sekandi will grace the occasion where monthly winners and the outstanding athletes in 26 disciplines will also be rewarded. Veteran rally driver Sam Sali will receive the legendary athlete’s award.
This will be an emotional point as the sports scribes will also be remembering boxer Leo Rwabwogo. Rwabwogo, a double Olympic medalist, won the inaugural USPA legends award last year but passed away in January. A corporate company that has supported sports most will also be recognised.
