FEMALE driver Susan Muwonge is gearing for a “battle of the women” at the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally next week.

‘Super Lady’ Muwonge, who will drive her newly improved Subaru, hopes to compete evenly with the only other women’s team led by South African Megan Verlaque. Her more experienced rival will race in a Volkswagen Polo S2000.

“With this car, I can race against any driver in the event but it will be a great moment competing against Megan,” Muwonge said.

Muwonge hit the limelight in the 2007 edition when she finished fifth.
She was also the best lady driver in that year’s Pearl rally after surviving the gruesome Luwero route that saw several drivers drop out.

Leila Mayanja, who is to be navigated by her husband Omar Mayanja, is the other female driver in the event which is also the third round of the Africa Rally Championship.

The official recce for local drivers will be held this weekend while foreign drivers will carry out the exercise April 29-30.

According to Clerk of the Course Kisitu Mayanja, no driver will be expected on the route after the stipulated official recce dates.

The event is sponsored by KCB (Uganda) Bank while Shell-Uganda will provide fuel for officials and drivers. Fire Masters will provide fire equipment.
