BUSINESS came to a standstill yesterday when a mob attacked the convoy of the rival Mufti, Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, as it moved through Arua town.

The chaos started at about 4:30pm as Kayongo, who was in tow of about 11 vehicles, made a stop in the town centre to inquire about the location of Muqtar Mosque.

The residents directed the convoy to Irshad Mosque, which also houses the district Khadi’s office.

On arriving there, Kayongo was attacked by a mob which shouted “thieves,” “thieves,” prompting his driver to turn the car and flee.

Reports of Kayongo’s visit had been circulating in the region since Monday, which prompted threats from his rivals.

Muslim leaders in Arua recently declared their support for Mufti Shaban Mubajje.

The resident district commissioner, Maj. Ibrahim Abiriga, vowed to bar Kayongo from addressing Muslims in the area.

He had argued that Kayongo, who is opposed to Mufti Mubajje, would promote conflict among the Muslims.

Abiriga also threatened to arrest Kayongo, though no policemen were seen during the chaos yesterday.

Ali Adrama, Kayongo’s aide, on Wednesday said his visit was aimed at explaining the cause of the rift among Muslims.

Asked to comment about the scuffle, the Arua Khadi, Sheikh Amin Maga, said Kayongo had not informed them about his visit.

Kayongo’s convoy was later reported to have headed towards Koboko and Yumbe districts.
