Kasalina’s dining of corporate drones

KASALINA'S is surrounded by office buildings, which makes it the perfect place for corporate drones to have lunch. Mostly the older ones, dressed in suits (of both genders) which implies that these are the bosses.

Didn’t notice many yuppies. I gather city centre yuppies are posers who prefer to go to the sort of place I usually review.

Because Kasalina’s is so suited for office lunch breaks, it has adapted. They lay out a buffet of the typical: rice, matooke, potatoes, meat, chicken, beans. The same thing everyone has at their own office.

You pay to a very very charming woman at the front, she gives you a receipt and you line up. Then you choose a seat.

The restaurant is long. There are two raised areas, and a valley between them. The chairs in the valley are sturdier.

The ones on the plateaus that flank it? Well, if you stand up too fast, as I did, you will knock your chair over and startle all the managers and directors.

Come to think of it, maybe the yuppies are not at Café Pap posing mbu they eat expensive lunches. Maybe the reason that it’s only managers and directors who visible at Kasalina’s is that this IS an expensive lunch.

They charge sh7,000 for a plate. That doesn’t include the soda. Maybe the yuppies are eating samosas which they bought on the way from Kiwatule.

Another reason Kasalina’s is perfect for lunch is because it is so centrally located. Just a few feet above Kampala road. You can spit your used toothpick out at the post office right opposite.

So, if I can list so many advantages of the place why am I not recommending it? Because it’s not a place to eat out.

If eating out is meant to be a treat for you and your guest, there are places where the food is less boring. Kasalina’s food, while adequate, is bland and unremarkable.

Plus, at sh7,000 a plate, couldn’t we have had waiters bring us our food instead of lining up?
It fares better in the evenings when it is a rocking bar, though. Great chicken.
