IF you thought an external hard disk only served to store data, you have had no experience with the Conceptronic TV Media Player (CMED2PLAY).
A 2.5 inch pocket sized gadget, the CMED2PLAY, unlike the usual external hard drives which primarily act as storage and back-up devices, can be plugged directly into a computer monitor without the need for a computer keyboard and central processing unit to access data.
It can also be plugged directly into a TV set to view films, watch pictures and even listen to audio files.
Isaac Otim, a salesman at SecondLife Computers at Lugogo Showground, says the device supports many of the major and popular file formats like XViD, MPEG1/2/4, JPEG MP3, AVI, SVCD, CD and VCD making it the all-useful player.
It is also possible to connect a USB memory drive or MP3 player directly to the CMED2PLAY to copy the data without the need for a computer.
To make it user-friendly this storage device comes with a remote control to ease its operation when using it with a computer screen or a television set. It also comes with all the necessary cables like USB, SCART and S-Video to connect it to a TV or computer.
CMED2PLAYs come with a storage capacity of between 40GB to 250GB. The 40GB stores 30,000 photos, 50 films and 20,000 songs while the 160GB onwards can store 120,000 photos, 200 films and 20,000 songs.
Unlike other external storages devices, it uses external power through an adapter of 5.0 volts not the USB power.
CMED2PLAYs are available at SecondLife Computers, Lugogo Showgrounds for sh50,000.
