Editor—I wish to thank President Museveni for finally setting June 9 as Heros Day in honour of Omukama Kabalega. The national celebrations will take place at Hoima Booma grounds. For long the Banyoro have been surprised that Omukama Kabalega’s name has always been missing on the list of national heros.

Kabalega did a great job resisting colonial rule though he was finally defeated. The traitors who betrayed him are well known. Kabalega’s name is known from the UK to South Africa but it is surprising that in Uganda, a 30-year-old person knows little or nothing about him!

Just like Barack Obama, there is a lot we can draw from Kabalega—the spirit of self-determination. This can be viewed in the way he expanded his kingdom to include parts of Kenya, the DRC and Tanzania. Indeed he is the best example to include in the patriotism programme proposed by President Museveni.

he had this country at heart.
Like him, we need to concentrate on national development, expanding our financial base and other developments rather than wasting time politicking.Omukama Kabalega.
