FIVE years ago, supermarkets were few in and around Bukoto and Ntinda. However, the trend is changing as supermarkets become a favourite destination for shoppers in the area.

Sharlotte Komuhangi, the manager of Quality Supermarket in Ntinda, says Ntinda and Bukoto stand out because of the growing population and its accessibility.

“Most people from Naguru, Kiwatule, Ntinda, Naalya and Najeera find it convenient to stop over and do their shopping on their way from work,” she says.

Komuhangi says another reason why this area is at an advantage is that customers are sure to do their shopping in a hassle-free environment and without any worry about traffic jam.

With the current lack of parking space and increasing parking fees in the city centre, many people prefer to do their shopping in supermarkets on the outskirts because there is parking space. The supermarkets also offer quality products under hygiene environment and at fair prices.

“The location of Bukoto-Ntinda, near Mulago Hospital, the country’s largest referral hospital, and Makerere University, also increases our clientele,” says Komuhangi.

With several entertainment centres, which are open 24 hours and banks that offer ATM services, the place becomes an ideal shopping centre, Komuhangi says.

At Quality Supermarket, we provide everything under one roof: foodstuffs, toiletries, toys, domestic utensils and appliances, not forgetting the ample and secure space for parties.

“We buy our items from local manufacturers, South Africa, England, Thailand. Most of our cereals and juices are made by Britannia and Mukwano Industries. We also sell packed charcoal.”

Rose Natukunda, the Kenjoy Supermarket Bukoto branch manager, says the supermarket was one of the first in this area. “With hotels like Forest Cottages and Kabira Country Club, the area is steadily developing and business is booming,” she says.

Other businesses such as eating places, meeting points, hardware shops, clinics, car-washing bays and salons have come up, making the area a one-stop shopping centre, giving it an edge over the city centre,” Natukunda says.

“Our business experience, a variety of items, secure parking space and customer care, makes Kenjoy Supermarket an ideal stop-over, especially for the working class on their way home from work,” she says.
