CAROLE Mugasha, Charles Mwiyeretsi and Alan Tumusiime all Makerere University graduates, emerged favourites at the MTV base/Coca-Cola video jockey (VJ) search at the Basement last Sunday. The competition saw over 300 wannabe VJs thronging the Hotel Equatoria venue for auditions. However, organisers expected 1,000 participants. A VJ is a presenter of a music television show.

Most of them were teenagers still in school and some at the university. Others had even been on TV before, like Rachael Kiwanuka, ex WBS Teens Club hosts Flavia Tusiime and MC Kats but they lacked the punch judges Gordan Hagan (Talent & Music Manager, TV Networks), Rita Tsehai (Senior Brand Manager Coca-Cola East& Central Africa), MTV’s Cecil Lyons, Karitas Karisimbi, Lyssendra Chen and DJ Kazoora were looking for. Lyons later said that the two “runner-ups” stand opportunities elsewhere on TV or radio.

Voting by sms of the three finalists starts on September 6 and ends on September 13 when the eventual winner will be announced. Fans’ sms votes carry 50% while the judges also have a 50% say. The finalists will appear on GTV, DStv and WBS at 7.30 pm. On September 27, the winner will get down to work, hosting their own show dubbed MTV Coca-Cola Chart Xpress with a lucrative contract including overseas trips.
