Forster-a-Light has won the tender to maintain and restore street lights in Kampala in exchange for advertising space.
“They will pay Kampala City Council (KCC) sh4.5b over a period of five years if they take on the tender,†KCC’s spokesman Simon Muhumuza said on Tuesday.
However, the company has not yet signed the documents for accepting the contract, Muhumuza said.
Street lighting has been inadequate, while some advertisements have been out of order. Some billboards are so old that they have rust, while others are knocked down by vehicles.
With the Commonwealth meeting (CHOGM) due, KCC called for proposals from firms that could sort out the mess in order to make the city presentable.
Sometime back, a company was contracted to provide solar and wind-powered lights to ensure that there is light even with loadshedding.
City-dwellers, however, have complained that the lights on Entebbe Road are dim, yet CHOGM is slated for November.
