EDITOR— A secession debate has been sparked off by MP Hussein Kyanjo. The MP argues that some regions of Uganda, particularly Buganda, are very disadvantaged in the sharing of the national cake. Norbert Mao is also on record as having agitated for a ‘Nile State’, for the same reasons.

I disagree with them because they tend to assume that equality is equivalent to equity—if every region is treated the same way, that will be fair. They are saying the Movement government favours westerners. I would like to inform these two politicians that their assumptions are misguided.
An example is the standardisation of examinations by UNEB that favours only children of the rich in urban and missionary schools. What Uganda needs is to critically analyse the federal system of government with a clear mind to capture their unity in diversity.
