THE Police are holding a 40-year-old woman for allegedly starving her stepdaughter.

Margaret Namitala, a resident of Kakajjo zone in Bweyogerere, Wakiso district, was arrested on September 3.

Mary Amunyo, the head of the family and child protection unit at the Jinja Road Police station, said: “The girl is deaf and dumb. She cannot feed or cover her body on her own.”

The 13-year-old Betty Namuyiga was admitted at Mulago Hospital.
Namitala said Namuyiga starved because she had a strange disease, which attacks and prevents her from eating.

The Police said her father died in 2002 and her biological mother’s whereabouts were unknown.

“Namuyiga’s mother dumped her here together with her brother after the death of our husband in 2002,” said Namitala.

Amunyo said the accused would be charged with child abuse.
