Eight trading centres in Manafwa district have been turned into town boards.
In an August 24 letter, the minister for local government, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, said he had approved the recommendation of the district council and that of the respective lower councils to have the trading centres upgraded to town boards.
“For the purposes of budgeting, the new town boards will take effect on July 1, 2008,†Otafiire said.
The centres are Magale, Butiru, Bumbo, Bukhaweka, Masaka, Bugobero, Bumageni and Buwangani, which is at the centre of a border dispute between Manafwa and Bududa districts.
The Manafwa LC5 chairman, Charles Walimbwa Peke, said the elevation of the centres was a positive gesture for the people of the district.
“This is a principle of the global movement towards urbanisation,†Walimbwa said.
Bududa LC5 chairman Wilson Watira, however, said he still awaits the decision from the lands ministry on the actual border between Manafwa and Bududa.
He said parts of Buwangani trading centre were located in Bududa district.
The boundary claimed by Manafwa left the water pumping station for Bududa Hospital on Manafwa’s side.
“We are still battling it out with the ministry of lands to show us the boundary. Gazetting a town board without knowing the actual boundary is tantamount to wastage of time,†Watira noted.
