THE Police have beefed up security on the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende highway, to check the increasing cases of robbery. It has also identified nine black spots along the highway where most of the cases occur.

While touring the danger spots last Thursday, Buganda regional Police commander Alfred Bitwire directed the district Police commanders to assign more officers on the road.

Flanked by the Mityana, Wakiso and Mpigi district Police chiefs, Bitwire said: “It’s a surprise that some of these spots are near town. The Police have to scale up intelligence to curb these acts.”

Some of the danger spots are Nswanjere in Mpigi district, Kyengeza, Zigoti, Jezza, Kamuli, Ndibulungi, Mpamujugu swamp, all near Mityana.

Bitwire appealed to the residents on the highway to cooperate with the Police and report cases in time.

Mityana Police commander Moses Otala Obo said most of the robbery spots were also prone to accidents.

The accident spots are Ndibulungi, Nswanjere, Mpamujugu swamp, Buswabulongo, Kiwawu and Ttanda.
Otala said many highway robbery cases had been recorded in Zigoti.

“A recent case was when armed men travelling on an army truck staged a road block and robbed people.”

He added that Police had since then tightened security. The new operation, said Otala, would include a clampdown on vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition.
