THE Standard High School Athletics Club trio who made a 1-2-3 finish in the national road running championships here on Sunday will make the core of the national team.
Isaac Kiprop, James Kibet and Patrick Kibet, who led in the race that attracted over 300 participants and was watched by thousands of spectators, were the first to attract a national call up ahead of the World Road Running championships in Udine, Italy on October 14.
“The first three automatically make it to the national team. The technical committee will meet and decide the fourth athlete,†said Faustin Kiwa, a member of the technical committee.
Wilson Busienei, who failed to finish the MTN sponsored event, however stands a higher chance of making it to the team.
Busienei, who in 2005 failed to finish in Mbarara due to fatigue, ended up as Uganda’s best performer at the world meet after finishing seventh. He finished fourth last year.
“We will evaluate the history of the athletes who failed to make it among the top three,†said Kiwa.
Uganda has of late put up good team performances, finishing seventh and fifth in the respective last two editions.
Forces UPDF, Police and Prisons returned to the big stage with a bang as their athletes put up notable performances. UPDF took the women’s title and were second in the men category while Prisons and Police finished fifth and seventh respectively.
+Abraham Chepkirwok clocked 1:46.89mins to finish 10th in the Rieti 800m IAAF Grand Prix competition.
