KYAMBOGO University Council has terminated the contract of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lutalo Bbosa’s, following stiff resistance from the lecturers.
During a meeting in Kampala yesterday, the council resolved that Bbosa submits his handover report within three weeks, not later than October 4.
“The council has decided that the vice-chancellor’s contract be terminated forthwith and be paid his earned leave of three months in lieu notice and with commensurate benefits, as per the Cabinet committee recommendations,†the university spokesperson, James Bulenzibuto, told The New Vision.
Bbosa was not available for a comment.
The council also agreed that the university bursar and secretary take their annual leave after submitting their handover reports within two weeks and not later than September 27.
The lecturers’ strike yesterday entered the third day, paralysing classes of over 13,000 students.
The staff protested a decision to send Bbosa on a three-month leave prior to a forced retirement. They argued that the forced leave would mean that he was still the university’s vice-chancellor.
They also demanded that the bursar and university secretary be sent on leave, if an investigation into their activities is to be free and fair. The academic staff received the news with delight.
“These were simple things that the council should not have ignored in the first place. We shall resume teaching tomorrow (today),†the chairperson of the academic staff association, Victor Locoro, said.
Earlier, the higher education minister Gabriel Opio said: “There is nothing to discuss with Kyambogo. I have directed my commissioner to ensure that the decisions of the Cabinet committee are implemented.â€
Kyambogo is Uganda’s second biggest public university after Makerere University. It was founded in 2001 as a merger of three institutions, the Uganda National Institute of Special Needs Education, Uganda Polytechnic and the Institute of Teacher Education.
