AFTER keeping out of the recording studios for almost a year, Juliana Kanyomozi has come up with a six-track CD, Kannyimbe.

All through the songs, one can hear and feel Juliana’s growth as a person and as an artiste — from being a sentimental fad to being a deeper and more introspective musician. For the first time, Juliana has displayed her spiritual side with a moving gospel song, Kannyimbe, as the title track.

It is a slow and soulful track that has moved some listeners to tears. Juliana begs God to shield her from rumormongers and to make the days of her youth worth celebrating.

Forget the ordinary preachy fluff; Juliana sings of loss and yearns so convincingly that even the harshest critics have been wooed. Meanwhile, Kannyimbe is already at the number one spot on several radio stations.

But why the unexpected detour into spiritual music? “Amidst all the waves of controversy and fans thinking that I had been knocked out for good, amidst my search for more meaning in life, I discovered that God is indeed my only friend,” Juliana explained.

But now she is back and has re-established herself as a commercial force to be reckoned with. Listening to the six songs on Kannyimbe, it is amazing to hear her transition from a cute pop starlet to a mature musician.

Kibaluma, one of the songs on the album, has cemented the pop icon’s success on the local music scene. The song became a dance club favourite even before it was on radio.

Kibaluma is done to subtle throbbing Afro-pop rhythms that, despite the seriousness of its message, inspire one to get up and dance. The song decries social ills like jealousy and rumour mongering.

The lingering Mundeke Mwagale is a musical masterpiece. It is an ideal song for late night radio love shows. It is so tender that it feels like the resting moments before sleep. It is lulling and surreal.

Juliana has also included a wistful rendition of a Rutooro folk ballad. Enkwanzi Yange is a wistful derivation from an old Rutooro romantic ballad. Juliana has remodelled the song alongside sentimental Afro-jazz tunes to give it a modern touch but the lyrics stay unchanged.

Enkwanzi Yange is the story of a forlorn woman who is searching for a lost lover.

Juliana’s new album is done to several different style of music — R &B, reggae, Afro-jazz, Afro-pop and will have a listener hooked right from the onset.
