THE Mbarara veterinary department has controlled lumpy skin, a deadly cattle disease that recently broke out in the district, reports Ebenezer Bifubyeka.

Dr. John Lewis Barigye, the veterinary officer, told The New Vision on Tuesday that lumpy skin, a viral infectious disease locally known as ekyifuruuto, was contained after massive vaccination was carried out in Kashare, Rubindi, Nyakayojo and Ndaija sub-counties.

Barigye explained that symptoms of an infected cow include a small lumps alias obutojo, loss of appetite and reduced milk production. ]

“Some infected animals die and the pregnant ones may miscarry if the disease is not treated,” he said.

He warned that animals that are not vaccinated should not be moved to other areas.

Barigye urged district officials to insist that a vaccination certificate be provided by traders transporting cattle outside the district.

“If anyone is caught moving animals without vaccination certificates, they will be fined sh2m or two years imprisonment.”

He said they have sensitised the residents on the disease and thanked the farmers for cooperating.

He asked them to report the any further outbreaks.

Barigye also noted that foot and mouth disease, locally known as ejjwa, had been successfully contained in the district.
