ABOUT 240 water meters were stolen in Kampala city in June and July, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (NWSC) technical manager has said, writes James Odomel.
Eng. Dan Kyobe said: “These meters go for $25 (sh44,250), which is expensive.

We are advising our customers to watch out. Any person claiming to be an NWSC worker must have an identification card, make sure you ask,” he emphasised.
There are about 104,000 water meters in Kampala. They are imported from Israel, France, Australia and Kenya.

Kyobe said the meters are used to manufacture fake coins of sh500.
“We have been forced to resort to plastic meters. We have not yet had any problem with this move,” he said.

NWSC’s public relations officer Miriam Kadaga said scrap dealers have started using children to steal the meters.
