GEOFFREY Kusuro won his first international medal, beating a field of over 60 athletes to the World Mountain Running trophy in Ovronnaz, Switzerland on Saturday.

Kusuro, who failed to hit the 5000m qualifying mark for the Osaka World Athletics Championships, had also failed to make an impact at the Mombasa World Cross Country Championship in March.

But at the World Mountain Running Championship, the 17-year old raced to win the men’s junior 8km race. He clocked 34 minutes 27 seconds for his first title in an IAAF event.

“He was in great form. He was just unlucky not to qualify for the championships but he is still a junior. He still has time to to progress,” explained Flavio Pasqualato, a local athletics federation, UAF, official.

Another Ugandan, Moses Aliwa, participated in the senior men 12km race, but according to the top ten results posted, his name did not appear.
