THE DStv/M-Net reality show, Big Brother Africa 2 has taken a cagey twist, much to the annoyance of most fans. Whatever stunts Big Brother is pulling, no one can tell.

Just when we thought the Untouchables; Lerato, Bertha and Kwaku were steadfastly getting their share of the boot, Big Brother turned the Monday nominations into a mock do. He decreed that much as the housemates had filed their nominations, they would be inconsequential come Sunday.

Instead, Big Brother will fake-evict two housemates, who will then be holed away to the penthouse only to return to the house on Thursday September 27, much to the surprise of the other housemates.

The two fake-evicted housemates will have full access to the happenings in the House via Big Brother’s high-tech gadgets. But, the remaining housemates will not know this — how sneaky!

Big Brother also reversed the nomination announcement.

Instead of putting the housemates who were really nominated up for possible evictions, Big Brother put up those who received the least nominations. In this case, it was Kwaku, Tatiana and Ofunneka, who now know that they are up for possible eviction — but it is a hoax, so you will not vote this week.

Lerato had last week won the marksmanship task, becoming the house head. But she relinquished her title to Maxwell, and took Big Brother’s other option, a FIFA ticket to the 2010 World Cup finals. But with Maxwell ‘so gone’ (thank God), Tatiana and Kwaku, who had come second in the marksmanship task entered a draw that made Tatiana this week’s house head. So she saved herself and put Lerato, who had done the same to her the previous week. Poor Tatiana does not know it is all fake and is happy that she saved herself and played tit-for-tat.

Meanwhile, our most formidable enemies so far, Bertha and Lerato, had each got five nominations, which were just enough for us to show Bertha the exit and wait for Lerato in the coming turn.

The Big Five; Maureen, Code, Ofunneka, Richard and Tatiana had outdone themselves to hit those big snakes right on the head. But now with Big Brother’s twist, we cannot be sure what will come next. Do these two have charms? The only chance we had of flushing Bertha to the toilet, Meryl saved her. Then when Lerato also came up for possible eviction, she was able to save herself. The two had been served to us hot and steaming on Monday, then Big Brother introduced his so-called twists. Is this his idea of saving certain people’s necks from the guillotine? Or could Big Brother be trying to buy more time on realising the game could end sooner than anticipated? I hope the thwarted nominations will be recalled after the grace period, so that our enemies are presented to us and we do our pick.

But even if they are not recalled, Big Brother will still not get away with this. Either way, these two are bound to leave the show.

Let us just harbour our angst like the proverbial elephant that never forgets. On one sweet day, we shall have our way. Also the housemates who nominated them will not forget despite Big Brother’s apparent plans to distract them. It might be his idea of diffusing the tensions that have divided the house into the Untouchables and The Big Five. But the decision to reverse the nominations and having members of the Big Five (Tatiana and Ofunneka) appear on the list of possible evictees causes distrust. The Big Five, who have been loyal to each other, will now think one of them was a traitor, the reason the nominations turned out that way. It is logical that if all the five were against the Untouchables, there is no way two members of the Big Five would have come up for possible eviction, unless one of them turned traitor.

This might cause discord in the meantime, but when the prank is unearthed, housemates will go back to their real senses and put Bertha, Lerato and Kwaku in the place they belong. After all, Bertha is not as smart as she would like us to believe because regardless of her attempts to win over The Big Five, they went ahead and nominated the two-timing, backstabbing pseudo.
