CHARITY Walkers’ Club Uganda is planning to launch a cross-country walk in recognition of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Uganda in November.

Addressing the press recently, Geoffrey Ayeni, the president of the club said: “The walk will cover a distance of about 800km, stretching from Busia to Katuna border.”

The walk will run from October 26 to November 14. Each day, a distance of 50km will be covered. Walkers will pass on information about the Queen’s visit and the British Government’s support to Uganda.

“We call upon the Government, citizens, institutions, companies, civil society organisations and other communities, to support us and make this ambitious event a success,” Ayeni said.

It is hoped that the walk will raise funds from commonwealth member countries and other corporate institutions.

“The funds will help to initiate and develop a commonwealth camping site on 10 acres of land on the shores of Lake Victoria,” Ayeni added.

He said member countries will carry their national flags. The site will also work as a tourist attraction, recreational and training ground. It will help to generate revenue for the development of charity programmes in the region.
