The question to ask is who are the heroes to be honoured? Are these heroes really relevant in Uganda's history?

What criteria does the government use to choose these heroes? Very many Ugandans still do not know the importance of this day. People need to be educated about its value. Independence would be a day of total rest but because the local people are not really valued in the celebrations, they consider the day to be for the rich pot-bellied.

It is only civil servants in most cases who really enjoy and understand the meaning of the day. When it comes to the actual celebration, most people don’t see any sense in celebrating it.

I thought that this would be a day when every Ugandan would be actively involved regardless of social status or party affiliation. I call upon the government through the local councils to really educate the wanainchi about the value of this day.

They should also lobby for enough funds from the government to buy what will be used to celebrate the day.

People normally lose interest during the celebrations because of the way they are treated.

local leaders encourage the people to go to the celebrations venues expecting to eat something but go back on an empty stomach.

The celebrations should be organised at least at parish or sub-county levels so as to arouse people’s interest.
