THE normal delivery that lasted 30 minutes yesterday rewarded Sarah Rwakiziba with a set of quadruplets at Nsambya Hospital.
A resident of Kanyanya, the 26-year-old Sarah said she was expecting twins. She could not stop thanking God throughout the day. “I am now a mother of super twins,†she said.
The first pair delivered at 5:10am and 5.20am were identical girls. Their identical brothers arrived at 5:30am and 5:40am.
The ward was a beehive of activity, especially for the medical officers, who said the last set of quadruplets was born at the hospital 17 years ago.
Curious people and relatives started arriving at the ward by 6:00am, informed about the rare delivery through the mobile telephone networks.
By 9:00am, the corridor to the ward was jammed by people. Bigger crowds stood outside. Nurses restricted entry as the crowds inconvenienced Sarah and other new mothers.
Sarah’s husband, Godfrey Rwakiziba, was beside himself with joy as he received people and acknowledged their greetings at St. Camillus postnatal ward.
Sarah said she expected to deliver a month later but she developed pains at 4:00am yesterday and was taken to hospital 30 minutes later.
“As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I was asked to get into the labour ward. I thought I would deliver by October 22 and that I was carrying twins, but I was astonished when the midwife told me two other babies were still in the womb.â€
Midwives Grace Nassanga, Margaret Akello and Sister Rose Nambogo delivered the babies.
The husband said he would ask the doctors to help them to stop producing more children.
“We have a nine-year-old and a five-year old son and now God has blessed us with four babies at a go. This is awesome. We had only planned for two babies,†he said.
The nurse in charge of the ward, Regina Namukwaya, said: “All the four babies are in a good condition. Although they were born prematurely, their weight is so impressive.â€
The first weighed 2.2kg and the rest weighed 2.1kg each. Their health score was also normal, the doctors said.
