IT is essential for every man (apart from some Muslims) to have a well-groomed beard and moustache. A man’s beard should be kept clean all the time.
It is not only a clear-cut indicator of hygiene; the way a man trims his beard elevates his status.

The beard is more coarse than any other hair on the body. Applying hair conditioner to the beard will soften it.
This means that a regular visit to the barber or acquiring yourself a shaving kit is a must.

“To avoid an itchy beard, wash it, but do not allow the skin to dry completely. Go to a barber and let him or her clean it thoroughly,” says Steve Richley, the proprietor of Body Care Pioneer Mall. The barber will then trim the beard to a reasonable length.

Richley says because most facial hair is curly, when shaved, the hair grows back into the skin and some bumps are formed on the face.

These bumps cause the skin to itch. To avoid this, every time you shave, apply a bump stop cream around the sides of the face, the chin and neck. It is also important to dry the beard with a towel and comb using a brush.

“For those without the bumps, shaving regularly is still necessary. However, so as to prevent friction between the razor and skin, apply a shaving cream over the beard before you shave.

“This way, there will be no cuts on the face. After shaving, you can apply scented aftershave,” Richley adds.

Tips on how to maintain a beard:
Always use scissors or a beard trimmer when shaving. Trim a little hair at a time.

To balance the beard, first trim one side and not the entire beard at once.

When trimming the moustache, reduce the hair from the centre to the edges and use a small brush or tooth comb for styling.

You should also shave any other facial hair.
