Seven people perished on their way to a wedding ceremony when their vehicle overturned in Mukono district at the weekend. Five of the dead were from the same family. Several other passengers were injured in the midday accident.
“From the information we have, six died on the spot and the other died later in hospital,†said the assistant Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba.
But family sources and witnesses insisted that 10 had people died in the Nalubabwe accident on the Kayunga-Bugerere road, six kilometres from Nagalama.
The night before, the deceased were part of an ecstatic group of relatives and friends who attended a kasiki (send-off party) at Kyanja, off Gayaza road, for Jane Nakamya, who was on Saturday to walk down the isle with Emmanuel Mazinga.
The couple was to take their matrimonial vows in Nsotoka in Kayunga district. Their relatives and friends were heading for the wedding when the over-loaded 14-seater Toyota minibus overturned with over 20 of them.
There were conflicting reports as to how the accident occurred. The Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a cyclist who suddenly entered the road.
However, eyewitnesses said the driver was trying to overtake a pick-up truck when the cyclist suddenly joined the road, forcing the driver to swerve off the road.
The dead were identified as Florence Namirimu, Faith Nakanyike, Florence Nantandwe, Gladys Nakanyike and their brother George William Kalali, all of the same family from Nakirama on Nakawuka road in Nsangi sub-county, Wakiso district.
The dead relatives included Safina Nakanyike, Faith Nakagiri Kizza, Zeres Namakula, Ali Matovu Muwonge, the driver of the vehicle and a family friend identified as Night Nabajwa.
The injured included the bride, Nakamya. Her mother, Mary Nakalumba Sserunjogi, who had hosted the kasiki, was also admitted at Nagalama Hospital.
Others injured in the accident included Margaret Namuyonga, Zuhura Nabbosa, Edward Mukasa, Aishah Namatovu, Amina Birungi and Jane Nalweyiso. Those in critical condition were transferred to Mulago Hospital.
Burial of the dead got underway yesterday in the villages of Budo, Kasenge, Kitemu and Bugerere in Kayunga district.
