THE Dairy Development Authority (DDA), the sector’s watchdog, has closed Fido Dido Ice Cream plant and Family Choice due to poor hygiene.
Dr. Nathan Twinamasiko, the head of DDA, in a statement on Friday explained that Fido Dido Ice plant located on Fifth Street, Industrial Area, and Family Choice Mbarara also makers of ice cream, were recently inspected by a team that discovered that products made by the two companies were grossly contaminated with chloroform.
The authority has also directed immediate withdrawal of the companies’ products from the market until corrective measures have been implemented and inspected.
Twinamasiko said the environment, in which the plants have been operating, puts at risk the lives of consumers.
“We have repeatedly warned these people to improve the standards of the plants but they deliberately refused.â€
“The closure of the plants is in the interest of the public. Consuming contaminated products may lead to the outbreak of dysentery,†said Twinamasiko.
He said subsequent inspection reports of the plants confirmed that they had been operating below the minimum regulatory requirements for dairy processing premises. “Further to the above, Fido Dido staff were found recycling ice cream cups, including those with decomposed matters, which are illegal and dangerous to health.
“This is carelessness, but we as watchdogs have to ensure the safety of the lives of consumers of these products,†he said
But Ral, a consultant with Fido Dido, claimed that the standards and conditions in which they operate were favourable.
“We don’t see why the regulatory authority has closed our company. “We cannot sell contaminated products to our customers and we have never received any complaint regarding the quality of our ice cream,†said Ral.
