THE Jinja Military Academy is to be transferred to the sprawling Kabamba Military Training School in Mubende District, the defence ministry and the army have announced.

Defence minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga and the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, broke the ground and commissioned the construction of the sh1b complex on Thursday.
They said construction would start at the end this month and would be completed in two years.

They made the announcement after they had presided over the passing out of 177 soldiers, including 90 serving UPDF officers, 77 former LRA fighters and 10 former UNRF II combatants who had concluded a 30-weeks officers basic course.

Kiyonga, who drove a tractor to break the ground, appealed for constant training and warned the army against the AIDS scourge.

He urged soldiers to join President Museveni’s Prosperity-For-All programme to help fight poverty in Uganda. “If we do not train and retrain, we would have no army.

And if we do not have an army then our people would not have protection,” he told the graduands who braved a thunderstorm.
Kiyonga explained that the academy was being shifted because the facility at Kabamba was spacious.

Aronda described the passout as historical. “It is historical because it combines serving UPDF officers, former LRA and UNRF II soldiers who chose to abandon killing people and were trained to protect people.”

The army chief asked the squatters on military land to vacate the area within one week. “I know some of the squatters are your friends and relatives. But army land is for training, not for grazing cows. So I advise you to vacate from the land before you are forcefully evicted.”

Aronda advised the trainers to include political education in the curriculum.
