M7 bails out ex-Kalungu MP
Kampala
President Yoweri Museveni yesterday saved the former Kalungu East MP, James Mukiibi Sserunjogi, from imprisonment at Luzira Civil Prison, when he paid sh31m for his legal fees. Sserunjogi, who stood on an independent card, won the area elections for the eighth Parliament defeating Lule Mawiya, but the latter challenged his academic qualifications in court prompting the Supreme Court to nullify Sserunjogi’s election. Mawiya (NRM) won the by-elections. Sserunjogi had failed to pay his lawyer’s fees and was on Tuesday committed to the civil prison for six months. He would have been declared bankrupt if he failed to clear the debt in six months. When the President toured Kalungu recently, the locals appealed to him to clear Sserunjogi’s debt.
