CAXTON Kalule maintained his fairytale run in the Olympiad Chess qualifiers to stay top of the table at the weekend. Kalule whose lead in the first phase surprised many, went on to upset regular campaigners Moses Kawuma and Raphael Buti in the 5th and 6th rounds before sharing the spoils with national junior champion Arthur Segwanyi in the 7th round.

Kalule’s winning run was only halted by Olympian Grace Nsubuga in the 8th round but he still retained the top spot with 6.5 points.

Kampala player Kalule is enjoying his best ever run in the event.

The leader has been a joy to watch since the Uganda Chess Federation competition started. Second placed Moses Kawuma is half a point behind Kalule.

Kenneth Kakooza, Grace Nsubuga, Segwanyi and Joel Wegoye are tied in third position with 5.5 points each.
Youngsters Segwanyi and Wegoye are a revelation in this competition having given seasoned players a run for their money.
The third phase will be played on Independence Day and on Saturday.

The top 12 players will compete for the five slots in the team that will represent Uganda at the Olympiad due in Dresden, Germany in July 2008.
