SOCCER enthusiast Rebecca Kazibwe is not in good health but is still passionate about Uganda’s number one sport. The Express diehard has been off the soccer scene for over a year because of high blood pressure, but regularly gets updates on the happenings.
In an interview with The New Vision, Kazibwe compares today’s events to the past era when soccer was highly competitive.
‘‘Today, league results are predictable, the game is less competitive,†Kazibwe remarked.
“Clashes between Express, KCC and Villa fans today were unheard of in the past when matches pulled big crowds.’’
But Kazibwe has some words of wisdom.
“We need to have real competition,†she said referring to the 70’s and 80’s.
“To have a competitive league, many issues have to be addressed including the way the game is run right from the top.â€
Kazibwe traced the game’s decline to the early 80s when some club administrators used their financial muscle to recruit players.
The clubs that did not have the financial means were left powerless and could not compete on the pitch.
Kazibwe said players of the golden era like Issa Sekatawa, Isaac Nkada and the late Sam Musenze were not so talented but thrived on hard work.
