A TOTAL of 275 people died in fatal accidents in Kampala between January 1 and September 30, the Police have revealed.

Majority of the victims in the 252 accidents were pedestrian, some of whom were knocked intentionally, according to the Police.

Of those killed, 138 were pedestrians, 47 passengers, 14 drivers, 55 were motorcyclists and 21 were pedal-cyclists.

In September, 31 people died in 28 accidents in Kampala as compared to 35 who died in August. The 28 were part of the 998 accidents that were registered.

Of these, 338 were serious, while 633 were minor. The Police observed that out of the 1,666 vehicles involved in the accidents, 143 were hit-and-run cases.

Following the deaths, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has directed the Criminal Investigations Directorate to investigate claims that some of the fatal accidents were deliberately caused.

The Kampala Extra Police spokesperson, Simeo Nsubuga, told the press during the weekly briefing at the Police headquatres recently that motorists were increasingly becoming mindless of the pedestrians.

Waving a copy of Kayihura’s directive, Nsubuga said: “If investigations prove that the driver knocked someone with malice, murder charges will be preferred.”
