TESO leaders on Sunday handed over a white flag to President Yoweri Museveni to symbolise the peace restored in the sub-region by the Government.

The head of the Iteso cultural union, Emorimor Augustine Osuban Lemukol, handed the flag to Museveni during a consultative meeting at Soroti Hotel.

The Katakwi LC5 chairman, Robert Ekongot, said the flag was a recognition of the pivotal role Museveni had played in restoring peace in Teso.

“As the people of Teso, we want to symbolise our solidarity with you in ensuring that armed Karimojong do not enter Teso again.”

Ekongot, however, said a few Karimojong continued to sneak into Amuria district and steal animals.
He said Teso leaders were opposed to a demand by Karamoja for a special programme to deal with insecurity.

“We feel that the UPDF must be allowed to do its constitutional job. Let more forces be sent to Karamoja.”

Ekongot also commended the army for helping the people affected by the recent floods.

He said the army had airlifted drugs and relief items to places cut-off by the floods.

Museveni said there was no special security arrangement for Karamoja.
“I have just been to Karamoja and my message to them was to hand in the remaining illegal guns so that they also live like other Ugandans,” he said.

The President said the army had broken the open resistance in Karamoja where armed ethnic groups walked freely with guns.

State minister for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru disclosed that the donor community had committed sh15b to assist families affected by floods in the country.
He said the funds would be chanelled through UN agencies in the country.
