KAMPALA - A Muslim sect, Bukoto-Nateete, celebrates Idi El-fitri today. This marks the end of their fasting period. The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, the main Muslim body, is yet to announce the official day for Idi. Sheik Haruna Suuna, the vice-president of the sect, said the main prayers would be held at Ngando Mosque in Butambala, Mpigi district. He said he would preside over the prayers which start at 9:00am. Suuna explained that the sect which was founded in 1922 by Sheik Abdullah Ssekimwanyi, does not follow the Islamic calendar which is based on the Koran and the teachings.
Ambassador Ntambi dead
KAMPALA - Ambassador Kakima Ntambi, a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, is dead. Ntambi also worked in Uganda’s foreign missions in Belgium, Italy, Germany, in various capacities including as ambassador and economic adviser. Panta Babinaga, a cousin to the deceased, said Ntambi had been admitted at Mulago Hospital for the last three months, with cancer. He retired from the civil service in 2003 and is survived by seven children.
5 drown in Lake Victoria
MASAKA - A total of five people drowned in Lake Victoria on Tuesday. Ronald Kiwanuka, Alinaire Bwete and Michael Bazibwe drowned after their boat capsized at Dimo landing site, while Jimmy Ssekikubo and Edward drowned as they were swimming in a pond near St. Charles Lwanga Kasasa Secondary School. The regional Police chief, Andrew Sorowen, confirmed the incidents.
