Dear doctor, can one get AIDS through kissing? Is kissing a bad act even between girls?
Name withheld

KISSING is not listed as one of the ways through which HIV is transmitted. While it is true that HIV is found in saliva, it is said that in order for transmission to occur, one would have to consume several litres of saliva to be infected, which is impossible.

However, for many young people, what starts as a kiss often ends up in unplanned sex, which exposes them to the risk of getting infected with HIV. So it is wise that you concentrate on your studies and avoid such relationships.

Kissing is an intimate and beautiful expression for people in love, especially married people, who are ready to handle the implications of that relationship. When something good is done at a wrong time, it ends up being bad. Kissing between girls is bad because one may end up hooked into a lesbian relationship.

The attraction to the opposite sex is normal. However, similar feelings with the same sex should never be entertained. Your main focus at the moment should be your studies.

Avoid things that can predispose you to premarital sex, un-wanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS.

CLARIFICATION
The last paragraph in last week’s second article had an error. We wrote, “When this test is done on 18-month-old babies born to HIV-positive mothers...” This should have been, “When this test is done on babies below 18 months born to HIV-positive mothers...”
