Avoid religious bigotry

EDITOR—Religious bigotry is very unhealthy. Unfortunately many people are guilty of it. A bigot has no room for any other opinion except his or her own.

This is why for example, in the past I used to hear priests publicly praying for Muslims and non-believers! This is why Muslims, especially those in the Middle East, look at Christians as ‘infidels’, ‘kaffirs’ or non-believers! Every faith advances what it believes to be right but there is need to recognise that God is responsible for the existence of all creatures on earth, including human beings. God reaches out to us in different ways. The essence of spirituality is not what we wear or say but what is actually in our hearts. God’s holy name should not be invoked to justify evil. When Diego Maradona scored a winning goal with his hand against England he claimed it was ‘the hand of God’ which had done so! What we say or wear cannot take us to heaven if we do the opposite of what we claim to be. I don’t think this is a condition for Catholics, Protestants, Muslims or any other particular group. We are individuals and will answer individually to God whom we can’t fool!
