Locals turn waste plastic, polythene into money

KAWEMPE division has hired Kenyan experts in waste management from Kayole Environment Management Foundation to train locals to recycle waste material because the division is lagging behind in the preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) in November.

KAWEMPE division has hired Kenyan experts in waste management from Kayole Environment Management Foundation to train locals to recycle waste material because the division is lagging behind in the preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) in November.
Nasser Takuba, the division chairman, said locals now make items like baskets, handbags, shoes and roofing tiles from waste solid plastic and polythene material, that would otherwise be left to clog drainage systems.
“We have moved an extra mile in preparation for CHOGM. Locals can now earn a living through collecting solid plastic and polythene waste material,†said Takuba.
He added that the programme was proving successful with assistance from Water Aid Uganda, the French Embassy and Sustainable Sanitation & Water Renewal Systems, a local NGO operating in Mulago III, Bwaise II and Kyebando parishes.
“Arrangements are underway for the division to exhibit some of the items made from waste material during CHOGM,†said Takuba.
During the launch of a sanitation centre in Kifumbira-Kamwokya, Sebuliba Mutumba, the Kawempe South MP, said garbage collection would no longer be a problem in the area.
“Bonna Bagaggawale (prosperity for all) is already with you through the experts here to train you on how to make easy money from waste,†said Sebuliba.
