EDWIN Ekiring missed out of a bronze medal, but was contented when he beat All Africa Games gold medallist Nabil Lusmari from Algeria in the Cyprus International Badminton Open over the weekend.
Lusmari stopped Ekiring in Algeria at the semi-final stage, leaving Ekiring to come back home with a bronze medal from the games.
However in Cyprus, the unseeded Ekiring had to fight on and dispense off Lusmari, the tournament’s fifth seed, 2-1 (21-14, 18-21 and 21-16), to book a quarter-final berth after 40 minutes of action.
Ekiring could however not go past second seed, Indian Chetan Anand in the quarter-final, the Ugandan falling 2-0 (21-10, 21-14).
It was the second time in two weeks that Ekiring was denied a semi final berth from a top seed.
The first was in the Bulgarian International when he lost 2-0 to tournament seed two Jan Fronlich from the Czech Republic on October 5.
