The Government has released sh60b to settle the pension arrears of 10,000 public servants.
Former East African Airways employees and UPDF veterans are among the beneficiaries. Others are retired medical and local government workers, teachers and police and prisons officers.

“All payments have been electronically transferred to pensioners’ bank accounts across the country. There is no need for the beneficiaries to travel to Kampala to receive their cheques,” public service minister Henry Kajura said.

Arrears of terminal benefits for public servants are about sh284b. The Government has budgeted for sh186b this financial year.

During the first quarter, sh15b was paid out to 900 former workers.

Kajura said the Government was determined to clear all the pension arrears. He urged the pensioners who had not received any money this quarter to be patient.

He also cautioned them against bribing officials at the Ministry of Public Service, because services in the pension office were free. “They should not pay any money to anybody to receive their entitlements.”

For questions about terminal benefits, contact the Commissioner for Compensation on tel. 041-4-251006 or 041-4250534/6 extension 302.
