THE Inter-regions golf tournament will, for the first time, be preceded by a professionals’ contest that tees off at the par-72 Kitante course this morning.

Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) captain Deo Akope said that the professionals opted to tee off a day earlier so that they wind up the 36-hole contest tomorrow.

Akope, Godfrey Mande, Stephen Kasaija, Amos Kamya, Herman Mutaawe, Dickson Lagoro and Sadi Atibu will battle for the sh2m stake placed by the event sponsors Tusker Malt Lager and Kampala Casino.

“Everybody knows this course so well. It is a very unpredictable competition. I will give it my best as usual,” stated Akope, coming off double victory last weekend. He won the professionals’ category in the Barclays Bank Corporate and Tororo Open tournament.

The amateur event, that tees off tomorrow morning, will have defending champions Western facing off with Northern, Eastern and Buganda regions.

The team event that ends on Sunday will be played on stable-ford full handicap format.
