IT is the season for simsim. You can buy a kilogram of simsim for as little as sh2,000. Holms Kyagaba, a manager at Healthy Organic Nutritious Foods in Nakawa, advises that while buying it, look for dark brown simsim. This type is from Arua and has a lot of oil.
Richard Ssiviiri, a nutritionist with Healthy Snacks at Garden City, says simsim is a good source of natural oil. He adds that it also provides whole bran that helps us with digestion.
Apart from eating the seeds roasted, Sseviiri says that you can also process flour out of the seeds to prepare porridge.
Procedure
-Sort through the simsim to remove stones -Dry it in the sun -Grind the simsim
-Mix the flour in cold water to form a thick paste and pour in boiling water -Boil for about 3-5 minutes
-Add milk (optional) -Add honey to taste (honey makes it taste better than sugar)
You can also use quater a kilogramme of sugar and one kilogramme of simsim, you can make simsim balls.
Simsim balls recipe -Roast the simsim until it turns slightly brown -Melt sugar in a saucepan -Pour the simsim in the melted sugar
-Stir to avoid the content getting burnt -Remove the content from the fire and roll into balls -Put the balls aside on a tray to cool and serve
