Well-articulated issues about the problems affecting the Commonwealth countries, presented by students showed how well-informed they are.

This was during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting mock debate by students of Uganda Martyrs’ SS Namugongo recently.

“Welcome to Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, endowed with the green natural vegetation, minerals and beautiful scenery,” Shifa Matovu, the host president, said.

The debate, held in the school main hall, had students from neighbouring schools like Uganda Martyrs Sonde, St Lawrence SS Sonde, Namugongo Boys Primary School, Uganda Martyrs Girls Primary School and Namugongo Parents Primary School.

The exercise, sponsored by The New Vision and BIDCO, aims at helping students understand CHOGM that Uganda will host next month.

Diamond Atukunda, who represented the queen, said it was a great opportunity for her to be hosted in Uganda.

“In such forums, we discuss and find solutions to problems affecting our countries,”Atukunda said.

Sharon Nassaza, who acted as the secretary-general, asked the Government to allow students present their views to the Queen during the CHOGM.

Lonah Mulindwa, the coordinator, said the debate served as a civic education exercise.

She said the school had a steering committee of delegates and heads of state representing the 52 Commonwealth countries.
