SURVEYING of the Kitante Primary School land has begun to accommodate a gynaecology and fertility centre. The Uganda Land Commission contracted Hood Construction Services and Surveyors to map the land.

The company, which started work yesterday, will also map out Plot 7A on Somero Road where Kitante Hill School is located.

“We were asked to produce a map showing the boundaries of the school land and the features on it,” one of the evaluators said.

In a letter of September 5, the lands state minister, Kasirivu Atwooki, told the administration that a land title would be issued in the name of the school.

The Bukoto-based fertility centre owned by Dr. Tamale Ssali, he said, would get two acres, leaving the school with 25. Dr. Ssali delivers babies through surrogate mothers.

Although the school supports the surveying of the land, it opposes allocating it to a private investor.

The school management committee has petitioned President Yoweri Museveni, to find another piece of land for the clinic.
“We want to put up more classrooms and teachers’ quarters,” said the school head teacher, Francis Senabulya.

He added that because of overcrowding at the government-aided school, which has 2,352 children, the administration wanted to cut back the number of children per class from 160 to 60.
Museveni gave Ssali the land in October 2005 after commissioning the clinic in Bukoto.

However, yesterday the school authorities reported that several individuals and companies were also claiming that the President gave them part of the land.

Senabulya said they doubted Ben Tumwesigye, who claimed to be Ssali’s son and agent.

“Tumwesigye said the President gave Ssali 10.97 acres, yet Museveni’s letter talked about two acres.”

Tumwesigye, who was overseeing the surveying process yesterday, said Ssali would first acquire 5.7 acres.
For Ssali to get the 10 acres, he would have to displace the school’s resource centre and the playground.

Senabulya said all schools in Kampala Central division use the playground for sports activities. The school is preparing to host some Commonwealth (CHOGM) delegates next month.
