Tiles, stones fast replacing paint

GONE are the days when paint was the major finishing requirement for buildings. Today, designers and architects recommend the use of tiles not paint. Paint is instead used to supplement various design patterns on the tiles and stones.

Joseph Kilama, an exterior designer based in Entebbe, says using decorative tiles is advantageous over paint simply because unlike paint, tiles are easy to maintain.

Kilama says decorative tiles are grouped in two major categories – the first category is specifically meant for interior, while other is for exterior design. He points out that tiles meant for the interior are delicate and light, whereas those for the exterior are robust to stand the excessive wear and a tear, especially from weather.

Steven Nagalana, a designer at Kajjansi clays, says tiles are not only superior over paint in artistic portrayal, but also in keeping a house firm. He says tiles make walls durable and firm as opposed to paint.

He, however, says brick tiles are the best for exterior design of homes and busy places because they are stronger and can withstand different conditions.
