Nabilah Nagayi Sempala, Kampala Woman MP, recently got married to Ishaak Ssebaggala in a grand ceremony at Old Kampala Mosque. Rehema Aanyu asked her about how they met

How did you meet?
It was in December 1996. His cousin, who was a close friend of mine, introduced him to me. Ishaak was a businessman in Kiyembe and I was working with Air France.

What attracted you to him?
He complimented me in everyway. He enhanced my attributes, encouraged me when I was down. In fact, his strength was a central attraction.

Did he propose on bended knee?
No. It wasn’t a Mills and Boon kind of proposal. He is a bit conservative. He said let us take our relationship to another level and I respected that.

What did you ask for mahri (dowry)?
A gold ring. Gold is symbolic of commitment and eternal love.

As a Muslim, Ishaak can still marry again. It is okay with you?
Which woman would say it is okay? I think we understand each other on the values we initially set.

Would you prevent him from doing so?
I am not an insecure person to dwell on something like that. My husband knows that I do not believe in a group marriage and I know he will honour my values.

Would you fight off women who seduce him?
I do not even think about them. I am very secure. If I spent time thinking about such, I would be very unhappy. Both of us want happiness for us and our children. We do businesses together and plan our future together. We know what is at stake. So if he goes ahead and misbehaves, it is his problem really.

What did you do on your wedding night?
(Laughs….) what everybody does. But no one should lie to you that they do much on their wedding night. The couple is usually so tired that they just want to relax and chill. We had a very beautiful honeymoon suite at Imperial Resort but we were very tired. We slept at 1:00am and woke up at 4:00pm.

How do you deal with advances from men?
I am polite but at the same time, very firm. I set a boundary which they do not cross.

What would you like to change about Ishaak?
He is a bit conservative. I would want him to be a little open-minded.
