Can hernia affect fertility?

Dear Doctor,
When I was about 11 years old, I was told I had hernia, but the doctors said I was too young to be operated upon. Once in a while, my scrotum swells on the left side. I also feel pain in the groin once or twice a year. Do I need the operation? Will it affect my fertility?

Dear Dan,
HERNIA is a swelling inside the abdomen. It occurs in the hole on the wall of the abdomen from which the intestines protrude.

This can happen at the umbilicus or the groin, where it goes into the scrotum. Usually, the swelling is on and off. It can be pushed back, but sometimes it cannot.
The pain comes when the intestines twist and do not get enough blood.

This requires an emergency operation.
Correcting hernia means an operation. The intestines are returned inside the abdomen and the hole is closed.

You have to talk to a surgeon about this. The operation does not affect your fertility.
