THE Democratic Party (DP) has refuted reports that it is planning to merge with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). The DP vice-president for eastern Uganda, Mohammed Baswale Kezaala, accused the FDC of working with the Government to undermine multi-party politics.

“The NRM and FDC should not confuse you. There are several occurrences both at national and local levels that suggest they are working together,” said Kezaala, who is also the Jinja municipality mayor.

Kezaala wondered how Winnie Byanyima, wife to FDC leader Kizza Besigye, secured the job with the UN without support of the Government.

“Yet the same government refused to second Olara Otunnu for a UN job.

“He got the position after being seconded by Ivory Coast, where he got citizenship,” he added.

Byanyima is the UNDP director of the Gender Team, while Otunnu was a UN special ambassador for children in conflict areas.

Kezaala was on Saturday addressing a workshop for youth on leadership and mobilisation skills at St. Jude Training Centre in Jinja.

The mayor also accused FDC officials of colluding with the Government to witchhunt him.

Kezaala cited a recent case where he was investigated over claims that he had sold the Source of the Nile to Malaysian investors.

DP spokesperson Betty Nambooze said the party would only cooperate with other opposition groups but not merge with them.

The officials also clarified that they would not field a candidate against FDC’s Abdu Katuntu in the Bugweri county by-election, much as the FDC fronted an opponent against DP’s Fred Mukasa Mbidde in Kalungu East.

Both parties lost the Kalungu seat to an NRM candidate.
